My Trip to Belize Being Well Prepared Makes for Success!
How do you make a trip successful? I was determined to make my trip to Belize one that I would always reflect on with fond memories. So the first step was to gather travel tips and information about Belize. I wanted to know which places I would visit and which roads would take me there. If I knew that and could find out the best Belize attractions to visit, my trip to Belize would be super.
So off to Central London I went and arrived at the Belize High Commission. They were very helpful there and steered me towards Stanfords book shop where I bought a Cadogan guide book of Central America. It would come in handy not only for this trip, but if I wanted to take future holidays to the surrounding countries.
The book authors advised buying a specialist map of Belize which was quite rare then. I needed a map that would clearly show the road system as I planned to drive around. I was going to really need those aids. Ok so far! The book was great. I actually planned most of my trip to Belize from that source, because it captured the flavour of the places it listed. You could almost picture yourself there. What I did was put pen to paper and started to work out my budget. First I decided how long my trip to Belize would be. Three weeks! I had £5,000 to spend for 2 people, which was quite a lot 10 years ago, but this holiday was special and I wanted to remember it. So I chose flights at a reasonable cost and the cost of a 4x4 for 2 weeks hire. I also bought items for a survival kit and a two man tent as we planned on camping in the jungle around San Ignacio. Not only that. Because we would be travelling in unknown territory we wanted to be prepared for every eventuality. Apart from looking up addresses of family we had never met we chose places we wanted to visit and what attractions they offered. We decided how long we would stay at each place, most of the stop-offs were only for one day. So the spending pot was split into 21 days and we tried not to spend over the daily budget. We had well in mind what roads we would take, and with the specialist maps they were easier to find. The maps also indicated which roads were paved and which semi-paved. The majority were not paved at all! We were definitely going to need a 4x4 which we pre-hired from Hertz here in England. The excitement was mounting as we contemplated the trip. I did not forget to take a daily journal with me that is why I remember so much of the trip along with the film we shot.
Soon I will take you on a virtual journey of my trip to Belize. Just link onto the little symbols wherever you see them and follow the trail. You will see a blue plane first then it will change to a red 4x4, and towards the end of the journey, a blue boat.
