I Love Scuba Diving in Belize!

We hadn`t a clue of how beautiful an experience scuba diving in Belize would bring. We also chose the right place because apparently, in some places the water can be quite murky. And I know first hand that descending in murky water is a fruitless pastime. It happened to me on my very first dive in Greece. I must admit, I did enjoy the adventure because it was all new. Here in Belize, however, I really tasted the thrill of this sport.

The main Belize attraction is scuba diving, drawing thousands of divers both experienced and newbies from around the world, and there are more than enough Belize dive resorts catering for this from the Northern extremities to the Southern extremities. Sad to say this, coupled with global warming, has had an impact on coral life along the reef.

If you want to experience the best of scuba diving in Belize, which dive sights are the best? Go east! Places like Lighthouse Reef nicknamed the "Aquarium", and Long Caye, east of Ambergris will not disappoint a serious diver, as they are top dive destinations of the Caribbean.

These islands became famous when back in 1972, marine scientist and explorer Jacques Cousteau and his team, on their boat Calypso, paid a visit to explore the Blue Hole which had it`s mysteries surrounding it with fables and stories of a bottomless abyss. This sink made from a collapsed roof of a limestone cave, reaches to a depth of over 400 ft. But, if it makes you feel any better, it does have a bottom.

The attraction of the Blue Hole is not the marine life. This is sparse because not much light penetrates the depth, but divers are interested in the cave formations, stalactites, and stalagmites about 100 ft from the surface. You will however, find it teams with life around the lip of the sink.

The waters about the reef are calm, ideal for diving and snorkelling, but that`s all you will find to do on this side of the barrier, in contrast to islands like Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker where a variety of sports and wildlife tours are offered. But for those who want a truly great diving experience, start packing the scuba gear!

Scuba diving in Belize at Glover`s Reef calls for experienced divers, and for those looking for secluded places unexploited by tourism.

Deep canyons that are thousands of feet deep are to be found on the east side of the reef. Boats take day trips from Sittee River, Dangriga, and Placencia, but ideally you can save on travel time if you actually lodge on the island.

If you fancy a swim with a whale shark during your scuba tour, travel South down to Gladden Spit. You could perhaps spend some time in Maya Beach, Seine Bight, Placencia, or Monkey River where you have a shorter journey to reach this brilliant little nook and cranny, known world wide for being host to the whale sharks that come in their droves, especially when the red snapper and grouper spawning season begins. When scuba diving in Belize, this unspoilt piece of paradise just can`t be overlooked.

Don`t forget your underwater camera to take some wonderful pictures of brain coral, vase coral encrusted with star fish, elkhorn coral, great sea turtles, sting rays, spotted eagle rays, mantas, all different species of shark, and my favourite, the whale shark.
