Did you know San Pedro is the only town on the whole of the Belize Cayes? But what a town!!! It is very laid back, and when you are in some parts of Ambergris Caye you would not think the town was just a few hundred yards away.
Snorkelling in San Pedro Belize
As a favourite of Belize attractions, Ambergris has the advantage of being very close to the Barrier Reefs. You can hear and see the waves crashing down in the distance. We would be going diving there while visiting San Pedro, but on this particular day, Tuesday we went "Snorkelling" despite the fact that I had to have an antihistamine shot. Bugs just love me and there happened to be an infestation of them that week, so much so that the place had to be sprayed by an overhead helicopter.
Shame I couldn`t get shots of any water activities, because we were there at Shark and Ray Alley, Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Here you encounter nurse sharks which are a rusty brown colour. They feel like sand paper and are very friendly when you have fish for them. The rays also come to you for fish but when it`s all gone they are off to the next tourist who is loaded with their dessert. We were like kids having touchy, feely sessions.
Night Life in San Pedro Belize
That night we had dinner at Ramon`s where we listened to a Garifuna band and drank the local brandy. Joe was still feeling feverish. I think he was still suffering from slight sunstroke after his Robinson Crusoe excursion in Punta Gorda.
Are you thinking of an Ambergris Caye vacation? There is some night life here, but be resolved that it is mostly day activities that the island caters for. Much the same goes for the rest of the Belize islands. This suited us just fine!
Scuba Dive - San Pedro Belize
We were up bright and early on Wednesday morning and had coffee in a little cafe/restaurant along the beach. This was the day we scuba dived off Ambergris Caye between the walls of the channel; that is, the opening gap in the Barrier Reef.
We had a practice dive at 9 am and that in itself was exciting because the marine life were also interested in us. We saw so many colourful fish and a green moray eel. The main dive was 2 pm. It was fantastic
Much of the coral has been damaged through tourism, so if you care about it support eco tourism; stay away from the coral and don`t buy any coral if offered.
Large grouper fish like to swim close to you, as if to ask, "What neck of the coral woods are you from?" They are so graceful as they swim along side, that you feel as if nothing could harm you down there.
You will see fish such as the French Angel, a slate blue fish with yellow highlights on scales, eyes and fins. If you ever visit San Pedro Belize and book a dive, buy an underwater disposable camera to capture the colourful array. When I visited, they didn`t have such things.
On our last day here we strolled along the beach and bought a beautiful carved boat. Even the sails were wooden!
What a fine end to our Belize trip. We spent a day back in Belize City with family before our flight back home.
Writing my Belize adventure log has brought back fine memories of that adventure holiday and now I am planning my next trip soon.
